GUARDIANS OF RHYTHM, MOKO JUMBIES, DIPTYCH
11X14" ( EACH)
Acrylic on Canvas
In this series, I pay homage the towering spirit of resilience and joy embodied by the Moko Jumbie, a sacred stilt dancer with West African roots, reborn in the vibrant rhythms of Grenada and Caribbean culture. Each piece presents the Moko Jumbie as a black silhouette, poised in mid-motion, elevated above the chaos of the fete, symbolizing protection, elevation and celebration.
The fluid pour background, is representative of the movement and spirit. The marbled textures capture the flow of ancestral memory and the uncontainable energy of the streets during carnival. Each pour is unique, mirroring how every performance and every dancer carries their own story and vibration.
Painting the Moko Jumbie silhouette on top of this wild, living background is intentional. It is a reclaiming. A planting of identity. A grounding of tradition in the ever-changing tides of expression.
